Social distancing / physical distancing (epidemiology)

The reduction in social contact between people of a given population to reduce exposures to an infectious disease.

Social distancing is a wide-reaching term including things such as increased physical distance between individuals, the ceasing of physical contact such as handshakes or ‘la bise’ and the reduction of all unnecessary physical interactions.

Sometimes referred to as physical distancing to remove the impression of the need to cease remote social contact such as phone calls or video conferencing.
