Population pyramid

A popular type of chart used to depict the age and gender structure of a population.
The classical pyramid shape reflects the decline in numbers as premature deaths deplete the numbers of survivors. However, with the marked reduction in premature deaths, the shape of population pyramids is becoming increasingly tower-like.
Note that migration can also affect the shape of a population pyramid. In a pension plan context, population ‘pyramids’ (or ‘towers’) may only relate to pensions in payment and therefore only relate to the period after retirement.
