Lang mae yer lums reek
\ læŋ \ meɪ \ jɜr \ lʌmz \ rik \
A traditional Scottish saying to wish someone a long and healthy life.
The literal translation is “long may your chimneys smoke”, signifying historically that if a person is keeping a fire burning then they are still prosperous and healthy. In Scotland, it is often used as a New Year’s greeting and sometimes as a drinking toast or to say farewell. It is particularly popular with Club Vita’s founder, Douglas Anderson.
